GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Topeka Mayor Mike Padilla and City Manager Robert Perez held their monthly news conference on March 25th—updating key city activities and initiatives while answering questions from reporters.  WIBW
  • The final phase of construction at the intersection of southwest 6th and MacVicar Ave begins Thursday, March 27, closing eastbound 6th Ave and the south leg of MacVicar Ave for about 200 feet and reducing westbound lanes—drivers are asked to follow detour signs as work will finish on April 25, weather permitting.  WIBW
  • The Topeka VA Medical Center is holding a Nursing Hiring Fair on Friday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to recruit registered nurses and nursing assistants for its newly renovated Community Living Center—an initiative planned for years that will add 13 beds for long-term veteran care.  WIBW
  • On Tuesday morning, Topeka Mayor Mike Padilla and City Manager Robert Perez announced plans to help veterans from Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth settle in the city—Washburn University and the Greater Topeka Partnership will join city officials in hosting a July visit by Fort Riley soldiers to show local job prospects and small business support opportunities.  WIBW
  • Topeka city staff have prepared a five-year, $587 million plan to upgrade local infrastructure. City leaders will review the proposal, which covers projects for roads, water mains and stormwater improvements—at the council meeting on April 1.  KSNT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Heart Association is asking lawmakers for funds to help schools buy CPR training equipment and install AEDs so high school students can learn life-saving skills required for graduation — the request aims to boost survival rates when cardiac arrests occur.  WIBW

  • The Washburn men’s basketball team beat Lenoir-Rhyne 90-78 on Tuesday night to start its NCAA Division II National Championship run. Coach Brett Ballard recorded his 200th win and the team will face No. 1 Nova Southeastern in the Final Four on Thursday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. CT.  WIBW
