COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Helping Hands Humane Society will host its annual Paws in the Park on Saturday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Topeka to raise funds for local animals in need—guests will enjoy food trucks, vendor shops, games, and a live playgroup demo with adoptable dogs.  WIBW
  • The 25th annual NLC Youth Association Fish/Chicken Fry and Silent Auction will take place tomorrow, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the NLC Community Center in Allen. The event will offer fish and chicken meals, a silent auction and raffle to help fund youth educational programs—drawing hundreds of attendees each year.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Stephen S. Rios, 31, of Topeka was arrested near Lake Shawnee on Wednesday morning after a domestic disturbance call led to charges of robbery, theft, and domestic battery—he was booked into Shawnee County Jail at 11:15 a.m. and is held without bond.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, a multimedia art exhibition titled 'Reclaiming Home: Remembering the Topeka Bottoms' opened at Arts Connect, 909 N. Kansas Ave.—featuring over two dozen tabletop models that share memories from a former Black and Hispanic neighborhood. Tomorrow, a documentary film with the same title will premiere at Brown v. Board National Historic Site—where contributors will meet at 2:30 p.m. before the film begins at 3 p.m.  The Topeka Capital-Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported that on Thursday morning the national average for a gallon of unleaded reached $3.26—up 11 cents from last week and 17 cents from last month yet 28 cents lower than a year ago, while Kansas recorded an average of $2.87 with Topeka prices ranging from $2.69 to $2.99. Diesel averaged $3.63 nationally and $3.29 in Kansas, with slight gains from last week.  WIBW

  • K-State Research and Extension specialists Abigail Gettinger and Lane Weins described a free workshop on managing the invasive Callery Pear in NE Kansas on April 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rossville Senior Center (429 Pearl St.) where locals will learn about tree identification, management and environmental impacts; registration is required by calling 785-232-0062 or emailing [email protected] KSNT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shawnee County commissioners approved $1.5M to upgrade Gage Park with accessible play equipment that will be finished by the end of the year. They also approved a $65M bond for a 250-unit affordable housing project at 11th and Quincy—financed through low-income tax credits and offering one, two and three-bedroom units.  WIBW
  • Federal cuts may impact Kansas’ energy assistance program that helps lower-income residents heat and cool their homes after Health and Human Services fired LIHEAP staff on April 1. Evergy said it is working with its national trade association while funds already received will be used for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program run by the Department for Children and Families, though its future remains uncertain.  KSNT
