COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 16, registration begins at 11 a.m. at Jessie’s Bar at 5011 SW Topeka Blvd. for a motorcycle ride honoring Tammy Moon’s legacy & supporting her family and Street Team Ministry. The ride will start at 1 p.m. with music from 5 to 7 p.m. and follows with dinner.  WIBW
  • Dillons donated $500 to the One Kid One Can nonprofit in honor of Nichole Miller, a Dillons associate who earned the 2025 Kroger Community Service Award for her leadership and volunteerism in the community. The donation supports her work to help children and families.  WIBW
  • Helping Hands Humane Society took in 70 cats from one residence as part of a 10-day effort that brought over 240 animals to the shelter in Topeka. The shelter has started spaying and neutering programs and will soon list more cats for adoption.  WIBW
  • LifeHouse Child Advocacy Center’s Heroes campaign ends today, asking Topeka residents to support efforts to provide safe interview spaces for child abuse cases. Funds raised by community heroes, including educators and law enforcement, will equip the center’s team + enhance their training.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Topeka Symphony will hold its season finale with The Music of John Williams at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at White Concert Hall at Washburn University, and it will kick off a new season featuring American Icons that celebrates the nation’s 250th birthday.  WIBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Residents in Topeka will see a modest rise in summer cooling bills as projections show electricity rates in midwestern households will increase by about $30, driven by warmer temperatures and higher costs; the National Energy Assistance Directors Association predicts a 8.5% national increase from June to September.  Kansas Reflector

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Topeka area high school seniors were recognized at the Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers for completing the CTE Scholar Program — the program honors students with technical skills, leadership and community service. They received certificates, a commemorative pin and a graduation honor cord as statewide recognition.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Laura Kelly vetoed a bill that would have required Kansas public schools to give elementary students 30 minutes of recess daily and all students annual fitness tests, rejecting the measure along with other proposals on legal tender and tax breaks as lawmakers ended the session.  Kansas Reflector

HEALTH NEWS

  • SENT Topeka has expanded its Southside Wellness Clinic (455 SE Golf Park Blvd in the Hi-Crest neighborhood) to offer basic care, maternal support, and help with coverage programs. The expansion, celebrated today by the clinic team, aims to reach more families and serve as a model for other non-profits.  WIBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kansas softball beat Wichita State 10-0 in its final home game at Arrocha Ballpark on Tuesday. Freshman pitcher Lila Patridge threw a complete-game shutout to snap Wichita State's 12-game winning streak and move Kansas to a 33-16 season record with a record 13 home wins.  WIBW
