COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sole Reason, a local non-profit, held its annual Sneakers and Smiles Golf Tournament Friday — a two-day fundraiser where teams competed in contests for prizes like a $30,000 car — and raised funds to donate shoes to local children.  WIBW
  • Topeka is getting ready for more visitors as local officials and business owners plan attractions and prepare hotels for the Kansas City World Cup next summer. The tournament teams will be announced in December—Lawrence is set to host one team.  KSNT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A teen from Topeka was hurt in a rollover crash on Thursday at 6:14 p.m.—his 2000 Ford Contour went off the Kansas Turnpike near the I-70 and I-470 split and he was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected minor injuries.  WIBW

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 24th, the Topeka Fire Department reported that its K-9 Sky took a toy bone from Molly—the department's emotional support dog—during routine patrol, and officials plan to retrain him while he remains on duty.  WIBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Groundhog Day: The Musical will be on stage at the Topeka Civic Theatre from July 5 to Aug. 9. Show times are 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays — the production follows a weatherman who learns to care for others as the tech crew resets the scenes with each repeat.  WIBW
  • Spirit of Kansas will host a car show that opens to the public at 9 a.m. July 4th at Lake Shawnee’s Tinman Circle with registration starting at 8 a.m., awards for the top 30 vehicles, and a portion of entry fees donated to charity + the free Blues Festival runs from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. behind Reynolds Lodge featuring five bands, a national anthem by Spirit Dancer Dennis Rogers, vendors, a water ski show at 6:30 p.m., a golf tournament, and ends with the Capitol Federal Fireworks Show at 10 p.m.  WIBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Labor Department canceled a Kansas unemployment fraud prevention grant in May that helped recover funds from fraudulent claims, resulting in the state losing $1 million without warning. Kansas Labor Secretary Amber Shultz called the decision confusing and counterproductive—warning it would slow claim processing and leave employers and claimants vulnerable.  Kansas Reflector
  • Governor Laura Kelly sent two letters to FEMA asking for extensions to file for presidential disaster declarations following severe storms on June 3—7 and June 17—18; her requests extend the deadlines to Aug.6 and Aug.17, and she said extra time will help local officials gather damage data for repairing public infrastructure. This move aims to ensure that all costs are properly validated before federal assistance is granted.  WIBW

  • Former and current Kansas Jayhawks will unite for the 17th annual Rock Chalk Roundball Classic on Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m. at Free State High School in Lawrence—raising funds to support kids fighting cancer and additional local families, with tickets available at Johnny’s Tavern locations.  WIBW
